Liverpool have already been very busy in the transfer window this summer, and the recruitment drive at Anfield is expected to continue.
Fresh from beating Arsenal to the Premier League title, Liverpool are now trying to sign Alexander Isak – having already spent roughly £260m on Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez and Hugo Ekitike.
Aside from Isak, Liverpool also hope to sign a central defender after selling Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen, with Marc Guehi a target.
However, a story from the Telegraph has now cast doubt over the chances of that move materialising.
Why Marc Guehi could reject Liverpool
It has now been revealed that Arsenal told Guehi earlier this summer they were willing to spend the required fee to sign him from Crystal Palace – believed to be £50m.
However, the Gunners were told that the England international is focused on starting every week and wants to be a leader wherever he goes – like he is at Selhurst Park.
The presence of Gabriel Magalhaes and William Saliba as the undisputed defensive pairing under Mikel Arteta made this impossible, and Arsenal have since moved on to Cristhian Mosquera.
Liverpool could face the same issue if the Reds make an approach to Guehi.
Arne Slot can boast a similarly formidable duo at the back in Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate, a pairing who helped Liverpool concede just 41 goals in 38 Premier League games last season – only Arsenal had a better record with 34 goals shipped.
Therefore, Guehi would appear to have no way into the Liverpool backline either, so unless this changes, those at Anfield should expect the same answer from the Crystal Palace No.6 as he gave Arsenal.
Liverpool’s centre-back dynamic could soon change
Heading into the summer, nobody expected Konate to leave Liverpool.
However, some interesting developments have occurred since.
TBR Football understand Liverpool have concerns over Konate as talks over a new contract with the France international are not going well.
The Frenchman has already entered the final 12 months of his contract, and Real Madrid are believed to be monitoring his situation.
Therefore, a sale could materialise if Liverpool want to avoid losing Konate to the Spanish giants for free, the same manner in which they lost Trent Alexander-Arnold to Los Blancos, which would open the door for Guehi at Anfield.
