Newcastle United have wished former midfielder Jonas Gutierrez a happy 36th birthday via the club’s official Twitter account.
At a time when the club is in turmoil, perhaps the social media department thought that celebrating a club icon would lift spirits – but it was poorly misjudged in the eyes of the fans.
The message read ‘once a Geordie, always a Geordie’ – but many supporters were fuming about that tagline.
In 2016, the Guardian reported that the Argentine won a case against the club because they didn’t play him in order to avoid triggering an automatic contract extension following his recovery from cancer.

The fans feel that the running of the club hasn’t improved since that time and took to Twitter to express their anger at how the club treated Gutierrez when he was there doesn’t tally up with this message now.
They are not happy at all with how the summer has panned out and this is just the latest in a long line of gaffes by the club.
It’s important to separate the social media team from those running the club, but this one was another own goal either way.
