Tottenham Hotspur teenager Troy Parrott made his debut for Ireland’s senior team on Thursday night as Mick McCarthy’s side earned a comfortable 3-1 win over New Zealand – and many Ireland fans have applauded the 17-year-old on Twitter.

Parrott, 17, lasted just over an hour as Ireland earned a win in the friendly at the Aviva Stadium. Derrick Williams, Sean Maguire and Callum Robinson all found the back of the net – while Callum McCowatt scored for New Zealand.

Tottenham teen Parrott has only managed one senior appearance for his club, a disappointing Carabao Cup penalty-shootout defeat to League Two side Colchester United. But he has shone for the club’s second string, and in the UEFA Youth League.

After three goals in two Ireland Under-21 appearances, McCarthy has opted to call up Parrott and give him his debut against New Zealand. It is likely that Parrott will be dropped on Monday night in a crucial Euro 2020 clash against Denmark.

Parrott failed to find the back of the net but the Tottenham youngster did notch an assist on his debut, laying off Preston attacker Maguire. It remains to be seen if Parrott will get a chance on Monday, with a win needed to qualify.

Tottenham fans were delighted on Twitter but many Ireland supporters reacted to his performance, and many were impressed with the Tottenham youngster and believe they have a real gem on their hands.
