West Ham travel to Manchester City on Wednesday night in the Premier League and will need to be at their best if they are to get anything from the defending champions at the Etihad Stadium.
Manuel Pellegrini did manage Manchester City and should have some inside knowledge, while they also went the distance with Chelsea at the weekend before winning the Carabao Cup on penalties.
The Hammers go into the fixture on the back of a 3-1 victory over Fulham, but manager Pellegrini didn’t get everything right in the win.
West Ham started with Pablo Zabaleta at right-back, who was given a horrid time defensively before being substituted off at half-time.
The 34-year-old is another with Manchester City connections, but he should be axed from the team against his former club.
He’s an ageing defender that will struggle against quick wingers, which is why he needs to be kept on the sidelines when the likes of Raheem Sterling and Leroy Sane could be playing.
Pellegrini should go with Ryan Fredericks at full-back and it will be a test to see how far he’s developed.
The 26-year-old has been sharing the right-back position with Zabaleta this season, but may have overtaken him now as he adjusts to the Premier League and is starting to deliver consistent displays.
Fredericks is a speed machine himself that will come in handy against Manchester City and it would be suicide from the manager to start Zabaleta in midweek.
