Arsenal legend and Premier League winning midfielder, Emanuel Petit, has said that only a handful of the Gunners squad are exempt from any criticism.
Petit, speaking to the Evening Standard, lambasted the current crop of Arsenal players and boldly made the claim that some experienced players only move to the club for what he called a ‘vacation’.
And when asked further on the players he thought were doing well in the current squad, Petit could only name four players who he believed were doing the business for the Gunners at the moment.
“The question is simple; how many Arsenal players would you look at and say ‘they’re one of the best in the league in that position?‘”, Petit said.
“For me, if you look at the last two or three seasons, how many players are exempt of any criticism? Three or four, probably: Kieran Tierney and Bernd Leno. I really like Bukayo Saka and Emile Smith-Rowe; the way Smith-Rowe plays really reminds me of Paul Gascoigne.”
Mikel Arteta has thrown his trust into those young players, while the likes of Tierney and Leno have, in fairness, performed well.
But Tierney will now miss the rest of the season barring a miracle, while the likes of Saka and Smith Rowe remain just 19 and 20 respectively. Petit, of course, is used to winning teams, given the success he had in his career both with Arsenal and France.
TBR View: Petit is right in fairness, too many are slacking at Arsenal
And that is why the Gunners won’t close the gap on the top four. Too many Arsenal players are simply not turning up on a regular basis and doing the business.
Petit makes a good point. And the sooner Arteta sorts his squad out in the summer, the better it will be for Arsenal and their fans.
