Manchester United’s director of football target Monchi will not be a fan of Liverpool

Manchester United are reportedly eyeing up the appointment of a director of football after a poor summer in the transfer market. The Red Devils are believed to want a new face in to deal with the recruitment and identification of talent, with question marks over Ed Woodward’s role at the club.

One man who has immediately been targeted is Roma’s sporting director Monchi. The Spaniard is believed to be on his way out of the Italian capital. He has fallen foul with supporters over the club’s business this summer, including the sales of Radja Nainggolan, Alisson and Kevin Strootman.

Gazzetta dello Sport is now reporting, as relayed by The Sun, that Manchester United are now keen to make a move for the former Sevilla supremo.

Monchi would certainly fit one part of the profile to work at Manchester United. He cannot be fond of bitter rivals Liverpool.

Liverpool were, of course, the side who snapped Alisson away from Roma this summer in a deal worth £65 million.

“When a very substantial offer comes in you have to consider it. We weighed up the pros and cons and decided to speak to Liverpool.”

“Selling Alisson would not show a lack of ambition. For me, ambition is about doing the right thing after thinking everything through.”

But it is not just the Brazilian who Monchi has had no choice but to sell to Anfield.

Last summer he allowed Liverpool to snap up Mohamed Salah in a £36.9 million deal. The Egyptian has gone on to establish himself as one of the best players in England.

“We didn’t want to sell him but we had no choice. We had to take an offer before the end of the month. He wanted to leave, but we would have kept him if the (financial fairplay) regulations weren’t against us.”

In both instances, Monchi claimed Roma had no choice but to do business with Liverpool and fans watched as two of the Giallorossi’s best players swapped the Stadio Olimpico for Anfield.

Liverpool also knocked Roma out of the Champions League at the semi-final stage last season, so Monchi must be sick of the sight of the Reds.

So who better to plot the demise of Liverpool?
