Manchester United: Zorya victory reaction; Everton want Frenchman; transfer headache over Italian
After Henrikh Mkhitaryan broke the deadlock just after the break to relieve the pressure on Manchester United, Jose Mourinho praised his team for playing well in tough conditions as he said:
“We played well tonight. One thing is to play badly and get bad results, which kills confidence and is more difficult to cope with. When you play well, you have to hope the results will come. The reality is nobody was better than us [in recent weeks], even though we had disappointing results. And in the players’ brains, that plays a part. We had the ball, we had the control, they were defensively good, they had a couple of occasions on the counter-attack and at a free-kick, but we were dominant and if you look at the numbers, we were the team to win. But yes, they were good enough to give us a difficult match.”
It was a fairly dull encounter in freezing cold conditions in Ukraine, with Zorya Luhansk pushing them to the very limits despite qualification from the Europa League group stage already confirmed with other results going their way.
After ongoing speculation that Ronald Koeman could make an effort to take Memphis Depay to Goodison Park, the Manchester Evening News now report that Everton will also make a move for French holding midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin with a January bid after he has failed to convince Jose Mourinho.
The pair worked together in the 27-year-old’s final season at Southampton before moving to Manchester and may now be reunited on Merseyside with just 11 minutes of Premier League action across three substitute appearances so far this campaign.
However, the club are concerned that they may now be stuck with Italian full-back Matteo Darmian after Juventus and Inter Milan have failed to make any approach for him, say the Sun.
That may not initially seem so bad given he is currently the first choice left-back for the Red Devils, but Jose Mourinho has made it clear that he has no long term future at the club and an exit seems likely either in January or the summer with Chelsea also said to be among those to be interested.
