Romano: Spurs wanted to sign 'extraordinary' £34m man this summer but he nearly wound up at Old Trafford

Tottenham and Weston McKennie seemed to go hand in hand for some time when it came to the transfer market.

Known to hold an interest in him dating back to the January window, those reports continued into the summer when it was claimed Fabio Paratici was once again pushing to sign McKennie for Spurs. It was claimed a fee of around £34m would have done the trick, but in the end, Juve kept their man as new signing Paul Pogba suffered a serious injury.

However, while Spurs’ interest has been long known, Fabrizio Romano has claimed that it was actually Manchester United who were offered the chance to sign McKennie. Speaking on his YouTube channel this weekend, Romano has said that McKennie was among a cluster of players to be put in front of the United hierarchy.

McKennie, along with the likes of Memphis Depay and Yannick Carrasco, was offered to officials at Old Trafford as they tried desperately to bring in new faces for new boss, Erik ten Hag.

As we know, United ended up landing big signings in Brazilian pair Casemiro and Antony. However, Romano’s update is an interesting one here and shows that despite their poor last few seasons, United are still big when it comes to the sellers market.

TBR’s View: McKennie’s Name Will Surface Once Again

Make no mistake about it, Weston McKennie will be mentioned again in the January window and probably the summer of 2023. He’s just one of those players who seems to be talked about a lot, and with Tottenham and United among the clubs liking him, his name will resurface.

A move to Tottenham would still seem the most likely. United have splashed out on Casemiro and Fabio Paratici’s close relationship with Juventus could see a deal eventually done here.
