Manchester United vs Leicester: Confirmed line-ups, match reaction and fan discussion

This afternoon, Leicester City have the opportunity to win the Premier League title at Old Trafford, with Manchester United’s league ambitions being limited to trying to force their way into the top four. When taken in isolation, this is a quite unbelievable state of affairs, as little over a year ago, the Foxes had just lost 3-1 to Chelsea and were still very much in danger of relegation while their opponents on the day were closing in on an inevitable title. If a week is a long time in politics, then a year is seemingly an inordinate amount of time in football.

The Red Devils are a somewhat reinvigorated team these days, and their progression to the FA Cup final last weekend by defeating Everton is a testament to this. Wayne Rooney’s innate hunger cannot be questioned and with the vibrant Anthony Martial; the hero from Wembley seven days ago, in their ranks, they will certainly provide a stiff test to Leicester City’s back-line.

After his additional one-game suspension was confirmed earlier in the week, Jamie Vardy will once again be missing from the first team for Claudio Ranieri’s side. Of course, they coped brilliantly last time out without him, in fact producing their largest victory of the campaign thus far, but the standard of opposition is on a different level on this occasion. It will be interesting to see whether Vardy really wants his team-mates to complete the job without him at Old Trafford or only draw, thus allowing the top flight sensation to be fully part of the victory party on the pitch.

Last season, the two sides were involved in a 5-3 thriller, with Leicester coming back brilliantly to surge to a terrific victory, ironically thanks in no small part to Vardy and his relentless work rate that caught out United’s back four. The almost inseparable link between this match and the former Fleetwood Town forward does not stop there, for when the two clubs faced each other earlier in the campaign, it was the scene of Vardy’s record-breaking goal in his incredible scoring streak. He could arguably take centre stage again, though this time from the stands.
