Manchester United Summer 2013 Transfer Targets Episode 1
Manchester United have had a fantastic season thus far. The Red Devils currently sit first in the Barclays Premier League, 12 points ahead of rivals City.
Sir Alex’s side are also still in contention for the FA Cup and Champions League, although in the both competitions they’re set to face tough opponents.
The January transfer window came and went without major incident for United as Fergie followed through on his repeated claims that he would not make additions to his squad in January. A deal for Wilfried Zaha was completed, although the winger will remain at Crystal Palace until the end of the season.
It is in the summer when Ferguson likes to do his transfer business and there has been speculation of significant plans already afoot. Here are the players that could arrive ahead of next season.
Cristiano Ronaldo – Manchester United
Old Trafford side look to tempt Spanish giants into selling prized asset.
Talk of Cristiano Ronaldo’s uncertain future at the Bernabeu will lead Man United to make a big money move to re-sign the former Old Trafford favourite.
Sir Alex Ferguson has been monitoring the 28 year old’s contractual discussions with Real Madrid closely and will look to make the most of the unsettled relationship between the Portuguese international and the Spanish giants.
Talk of a possible Real Madrid exit may well be further heightened if, as expected, Jose Mourinho leaves the La Liga side this summer.
Robert Lewandowski – Borussia Dortmund
Robert Lewandowski could still join Manchester United this summer.
The Borussia Dortmund striker is widely expected to quit the German champions at the end of the season, with rivals Bayern Munich seemingly at the head of the queue.
Dortmund want £25.5million for the Poland centre forward and Pep Guardiola, who will take the reins at the Allianz Arena next season, has ordered his club to match the value.
United, however, are reluctant to stump up a premium and are still trying to come to some sort of agreement with the club and player.
Son Heung-Min – Hamburg
United have joined Chelsea in the race to sign Hamburg striker Son Heung-min.
The 20-year-old has bagged nine goals in a breakthrough season in the Bundesliga and is attracting interest from a number of top clubs.
The South Korea star is valued at around £10million by his club, who are resigned to losing him to one of European powerhouses, with United scouts regularly watching him action.
Simon Mignolet – Sunderland
Manchester United are reportedly keeping tabs on the Sunderland keeper.
Mignolet has been in stunning form this season and has prompted bigger clubs to be linked with him in a summer move.
The 24 year old was named North East player of the year yesterday evening at an awards ceremony and Sir Alex’s team have been scouting the stopper in recent weeks.
Angel Di Maria – Real Madrid
United have also been linked with a move for Real Madrid midfielder Angel Di Maria.
Los Blancos are planning a clear out of players in the summer, and di Maria appears to be on the list of those who could be on the move.
The Argentine has predominantly been used as a substitute, as manager Jose Mourinho has a wealth of talent at his disposal.
James Rodriguez – FC Porto
James Rodriguez could join Manchester United from Porto in the summer.
It’s hardly highway robbery but Manchester United will have to part with a hefty sum to capture El Bandido.
Sir Alex Ferguson is willing to use out-of-favour Nani as bait to land the 20-year-old Porto sensation, who has a release clause reputed to be more than £36million.
Asmir Begovic – Stoke
Within the last month or so, reports have suggested United are set to revisit their interest in Stoke’s Asmir Begovic .
Sir Alex Ferguson is confident of securing an £8million deal for the goalkeeper which would put David de Gea’s Old Trafford future in severe doubt.
The promising young goalkeeper has yet to truly settle in Manchester or adjust to Premier League climes and with links to Real Madrid and Barcelona ongoing could return to Spain.
Ezequiel Garay – Benfica
With Rio Ferdinand’s contract still set to expire in the summer and Nemanja Vidic having been ravaged with injuries in the past 13 months, a new central defender may well be in Ferguson’s thinking. It has been reported that Argentina international Garay features prominently in his list of targets.
The 26-year-old has been an impressive performer for Benfica following a disappointing spell at Real Madrid, yet the Portuguese side’s financial situation could lead them to accepting an offer of around £15 million.
