Leeds United finally got the signing of Brazilian winger Raphinha over the line on Monday’s deadline day, with a deal being announced in the last hour of the window – and Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes has sent him a message on Instagram.
Raphinha, 23, played for Rennes on Sunday afternoon during a 2-2 draw against Stade Reims – even scoring in the match. A medical then took place on Monday morning, after Raphinha arrived in Yorkshire on Sunday evening.
The winger will wear the number 18 shirt at Elland Road, with a fee of £17million plus add-ons (BBC) going to Rennes. He boasts enormous speed and creativity, and had a hand in 14 goals during his 35 league and cup outings last term.
Raphinha – who only joined Rennes from Sporting Lisbon last summer – has chosen to join Leeds despite Rennes qualifying for the Champions League. He posted on Instagram, underlining his delight after completing a move to Elland Road.
Raphinha will now have to show his quality in order to break into the starting line-up at Leeds, with Jack Harrison and Helder Costa both in stunning form so far this season. Ian Poveda, Gjanni Alioski and Stuart Dallas are options out wide.
Raphinha – who played 41 times for Sporting Lisbon and wore the green and white of the Portuguese side alongside Fernandes – was welcomed to England and the Premier League by the Manchester United star, who put aside rivalry to send a message.
His message is translated as: “Welcome to the Premier League brother.”
