Manchester United: Shocking news for Rooney; Mourinho wants Celtic striker; Champions League blow

Wayne Rooney could be set to lose the England captaincy in the aftermath of his late night drinking session on a Saturday night, claim the Independent. The FA are investigating what happened but Gareth Southgate is keen to put his foot down in the hope of being given the job permanently and wanting to avoid losing the respect of his senior players before his reign has even truely begun.

It is just the latest blow to Rooney this season, whose actions are also believed to have infuriated club boss Jose Mourinho as he struggles to justify a first team place for both club and country.

The Mirror report that the Red Devils could make a move for Celtic forward Moussa Dembele to replace Rooney and provide depth up front. The 20-year-old has been in fine form for Brendan Rodgers this season but is reportedly reluctant to depart Celtic Park as he sees it as the perfect place to continue his development.

The French youth international may be persuaded by a megabucks offer and Jose Mourinho is desperate to land his man, though Celtic are unlikely to let him leave easily or cheaply, meaning the deal may be delayed until the youngster is ready to push for a move to take his career to the next level.

Club bosses have also revealed that should the club miss out on Champions League qualification this season, it would cost them £21 million due to a clause in their sponsorship contract with Adidas, claim BBC Sport.

Currently six points off the top four and sitting in sixth place, the pressure will continue to mount on under fire boss Jose Mourinho unless results can pick up, starting with the visit of Arsenal to Old Trafford this weekend.
