Manchester United round-up: Mourinho reacts to West Ham win; Perisic talks reopened; Spurs interest in Martial

Manager Jose Mourinho was delighted with his club’s performance after they begun the 2017/18 Premier League season with a 4-0 win over West Ham. Mourinho told the club website that despite the win, the game could have gone very differently as he said:

“I am but I remember every second of the game. I don’t forget the ball hitting the bar at 2-0 and Diafra Sakho coming onto the pitch, in spite of speaking about Sakho at half-time, he was free and almost scored. If the score was 2-1, the last 20 minutes, instead of enjoying to score more goals, it would be to suffer and not concede the equaliser, for not losing two points. Yes, we did very good things but the thing I’m more pleased about is the confidence levels in the team and individually. The confidence to play good football.”

New boy Romelu Lukaku got a brace alongside late goals from Anthony Martial and Paul Pogba which helped to record an impressive win which puts United top of the Premier League after one game.

The team could continue to improve as the Mirror say that Manchester United have reopened talks with Inter Milan. Despite having had two previous bids rejected by Luciano Spalletti’s club, the Red Devils are now thought to be close to meeting the asking price for the Croatian.

Perisic has been a target for the club all summer and it had seemed that a deal was dead not so long ago. Now, it looks like it could be back on the cards and may be sealed before the transfer window closes at the end of the month.

That could complicate the future of Anthony Martial, particularly as French outlet RMC Sport claimed that United have rejected a bid from Premier League rivals Tottenham for the left winger. Manchester United are insistent that they will not sell the former Monaco man.

Martial did come off the bench to score on Sunday against West Ham, but if Perisic arrives then it could be hard to see how he could earn regular football with the likes of Jesse Lingard, Juan Mata, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Marcus Rashford already competing for places.
