The Sun claim that striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic has rejected an offer from Manchester United to extend his contract for another year which would see him earn £13 million whilst injured, as he does not want to charge the club for his services whilst he is out injured with a serious knee ligament injury.
The Swede is expected to be out until into next season, putting his future in doubt with his contract at Old Trafford set to expire in the summer, but the 35-year-old could have a number of options on the table, with offers from the MLS reported to be possible. Alternatively, he could end his playing career to take up a coaching role.
Ibrahimovic will have been particularly disappointed to have missed Thursday night’s Manchester Derby. In a fraught game, neither side found the back of the net, but Jose Mourinho felt that his side had the better chances, as he told the club website:
“With the resilience, the character, the personality, the desire and all the objectives we can find, I am super happy with the boys. In the first half, we were very good. We controlled them totally, easily, and we were dangerous in the counter attack. We had a couple of good chances to score in the first half. If we repeat that in the second half, we win it…
“I spoke with Marouane, he’s very disappointed, he feels that it’s a red card because he’s Marouane Fellaini. I spoke with Martin [Atkinson, the referee] and Martin told me that in his opinion it was a red card. I didn’t watch but probably I can guess it is a bit of a red card and it is a bit of a very experienced, smart Argentinian player.
“He says that Sergio Aguero was intelligent, the way he reacted, but the only thing I know is that we had to play almost 15 minutes with a tired team.”
Midfielder Marouane Fellaini was sent off for a foolish headbutt after an unnecessary foul on striker Sergio Aguero, in what was the flash point of the game, with City enjoying more of the possession and the opportunities as the game wore on.
United could certainly have done with some more firepower and one man who could bring that is Chelsea’s Willian, as ESPN report that the Red Devils are targeting the Blues winger as a potential summer addition, with Jose Mourinho looking to add two forwards to his squad in the hope of competing for the Premier League title next season.
The winger was Chelsea’s player of the season last season but the 28-year-old has made just 13 Premier League starts this campaign, despite scoring 10 and registering three assists in all competitions. With that in mind, the Brazilian could be open to a potential move to Manchester, if Mourinho is able to offer him first team football.
