Manchester United round-up: Target turns down contract; Zlatan reveals future; Juventus nearly signed superstar

There is good news for Manchester United as one of their reported targets, Monaco midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko, is believed to have turned down an offer of a new contract, according to the Mirror. The youngster was offered a new deal but club bosses think that his head has already been turned by an offer from England.

The 22-year-old holding midfielder has been very impressive this season, scoring twice in 32 games in all competitions, and has attracted attention from both Chelsea and Manchester City as well as Manchester United, with the Frenchman expected to complete a move away from France this summer.

However, another man whose future remains unclear is Zlatan Ibrahimovic. The Swede has now scored 20 goals this season and continues to shock many spectators with his quality, but speculation continues as to whether he will remain at Old Trafford next season. BBC Sport report that when quizzed on his future, he replied:

“We’ll wait and see… We have one [trophy] and we can get our second one. We are still in the Europa League and FA Cup, so if we don’t become champions in the Premier League at least we can try and win two or three trophies.”

Jose Mourinho has stated that he believes the talisman will be at the club this time next year, but rumours have linked him with various moves abroad as he nears the end of his career.

There are few bigger names in football than Ibrahimovic, but former Juventus director Gianni Di Marzio has revealed that Cristiano Ronaldo nearly moved to Turin from Sporting Lisbon rather than Manchester, as he revealed to Marca:

“I called my club and told them I’d seen someone who would be the best player in the world, obviously after Maradona. I negotiated and brought Cristiano over to Turin in 2002 to sign for Juve, but [former striker Marcelo] Salas didn’t accept the terms of the swap deal. For just a few million euros, Salas didn’t want to leave and so Juventus lost out on Cristiano Ronaldo.”

Instead, the now Real Madrid striker moved to Manchester where he would go on to become one of the best players in the world, with the Red Devils selling him on to the Spanish club for a huge profit after years of success at Old Trafford.
