Manchester United round-up: Spurs react to Dier interest; Rooney wants to stay; injury blow for Young

The Daily Mail report that Tottenham are confident of seeing off interest from Manchester United in securing the services of Eric Dier, as they remain convinced that the 23-year-old would not be tempted even if a £40 million bid was made for the England international this summer.

Currently earning £50,000 per week on a long term contract and with Spurs reluctant to offer any wage increases, Dier could undoubtedly earn more at Old Trafford but clearly has other priorities. If Tottenham are correct in their confidence, it could be a major blow to United’s transfer hopes for the summer.

One man who also looked to clear up his future was Wayne Rooney as the club captain revealed in a press conference that he wants to stay at Old Trafford over the summer and is hoping to play a role in the squad next season as he said, as is quoted by Sky Sports:

“I’ve been at this club 13 years, of course I want to play football. [At Manchester United?] Of course. I haven’t thrown my toys out of the pram but I do want to play to help the team. Football changes. You have different challenges in your career. I would like to play more but I’ve tried to help the team on and off pitch. Of course you want to play every game. I’ve had to try to take my chance when called upon. I try to do my best for the team.”

Rooney has made just 20 starts this campaign, down from 39 last season, and at times has looked frozen out by Jose Mourinho who clearly no longer feels that the 31-year-old has much to offer to the Red Devils as he reaches the end of his career, with two years left on his current contract.

In a major blow to Jose Mourinho, versatile player Ashley Young has been ruled out for the rest of the season after suffering a hamstring strain against Celta Vigo last Thursday. The Manchester Evening News believe that the injury, which forced him to be substituted only 11 minutes after replacing Henrikh Mkhitaryan, has put an end to his campaign.

Young was expected to leave the club in January but a move failed to materialise and has seen an increase in game time since, with a current defensive injury crisis making him one of the first choices for Mourinho with the likes of Luke Shaw, Marcos Rojo, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones all having been ruled out.
