As many fans may have thought, the Sun claim that Sir Alex Ferguson has finally conceded that he made the wrong call in suggesting David Moyes as his replacement as manager of Manchester United. The newspaper believes that the retired Scottish manager thinks that, in hindsight, he should have recommended Jose Mourinho.
Having just left Real Madrid at the time, Mourinho was a realistic option for the Red Devils and was one of the favourites to take over in the dug-out, but he was forced to wait several more years whilst the former Everton boss and Louis Van Gaal both struggled to replicate the success that Ferguson achieved.
However, Duncan Castles has written for Yahoo, explaining that the Old Trafford outfit nearly missed out on Jose Mourinho last summer as Paris Saint-Germain made moves to secure his services and the former Chelsea boss was keen on the Ligue Un side given the strength of their squad.
Instead, he was convinced to take on the challenge of rebuilding Manchester United, with promises of a large transfer budget. So far, his choice seems to have been the right one, with two titles already under his belt in the Community Shield and EFL Cup, but a top four finish is what will really matter to the former Real Madrid and Inter Milan boss.
Mourinho will be pleased to have another option available to him in the club’s fight for a place in the top four which could see them in the Champions League next season. Phil Jones told MUTV that he is expecting to make an imminent return as he said:
“Yes [it’s positive news], I’ve been training for the last few days and I’m looking forward to coming back. I think I’ve been out for three weeks so, even if I trained two days before the [EFL Cup final] game, which I did, I didn’t expect to be involved. It was difficult really and a bit disappointing but these things happen.”
The former Blackburn defender has been out of action since the game against Hull but is now hoping to be back in contention for the final two and a half months of the campaign.
