The Mirror claim that Manchester United are delaying offering Jose Mourinho a new contract until after the Europa League final and could shelve plans to extend his current deal if the Red Devils are not victorious. The former Real Madrid boss could be offered a two year extension.
Club bosses are desperate for a return to the Champions League and, whilst they will not sack Mourinho if they are stuck with another season of Europa League football, would not entertain the idea of rewarding a manager who has failed to fulfill his primary aim for his debut season.
Mourinho is already making plans for next season, and the Sun believe that they could involve Chelsea midfielder Nemanja Matic if a move for Tottenham’s Eric Dier is unsuccessful. A £35 million bid may be required for the Serbian, who has been first choice under Antonio Conte this season.
Matic was linked with a move away from west London last summer but it never materialised, and with a number of players linked with a move to Chelsea this time round, he could become an option for United if he is not happy with having to fight for his place at Stamford Bridge.
Jose Mourinho clearly had his eyes elsewhere on Sunday as he granted four youngsters their full debuts at Old Trafford up against Crystal Palace in the final Premier League game of the season, with striker Josh Harrop on the scoresheet as he was joined by Joel Pereira in goal and midfielders Scott McTominay and Demetri Mitchell.
Harrop opened the scoring after a quarter of an hour with Paul Pogba adding another only four minutes later, whilst another teenager was given an opportunity, as Angel Gomes replaced Wayne Rooney in the 88th minute, for what could be the Englishman’s final appearance for United at Old Trafford.
