Manchester United round-up: Monaco’s Bernardo Silva linked; De Gea won’t be forced to stay; Mourinho explains criticisms

Get French Football News and the Sun have reported on reports in the paper edition of France Football, which claim that Manchester United have made contact with AS Monaco over a £42 million transfer for attacker Bernardo Silva. The Portuguese playmaker has been a key part of their side as the French club have taken the Champions League and Ligue 1 by storm.

The central and right sided attacker has been hugely impressive, scoring nine and recording 11 assists in 51 games so far this season, and the 22-year-old is attracting attention from all over Europe with United believed to be ahead of the chasing pack by having already entered into talks.

However, a major blow for the club could come in the form of David de Gea’s potential departure from Old Trafford, according to Marca. The Spanish newspaper claim that Jose Mourinho will not stand in his goalkeeper’s way if Zinedine Zidane and co. make a bid for the Spaniard this summer.

De Gea has an important role to play for the Red Devils and Mourinho sees him as a key part of his plans for next season, but given that the same move collapsed at the last minute in 2015, the manager has decided not to stop him from making the move this time to avoid risking having an unhappy player in his squad.

He has certainly not been afraid to risk upsetting some of his players this season though, and the former Inter Milan boss explained his behaviour of criticising players like Luke Shaw, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Anthony Martial, as he told Sky Sports:

“It is not a psychological approach. It is common sense. When you give everything you have, I cannot demand more from you. Marcus [Rashford], even when not performing especially well, he was giving absolutely everything. I could never demand more from him. I could just support and say, ‘Better days will arrive’.

“Always super happy with the approach of such a young and talented kid. Some other guys don’t give everything they have so that’s the point. They have to and when they do it, I’m happy with them, it doesn’t matter how they perform.”

It seems to have had an effect, with the likes of Marcus Rashford having picked up his form whilst Anthony Martial was back on the scoresheet against Burnley at the weekend after criticism from Mourinho.
