Spanish newspaper AS claim that Manchester United are one of several clubs to be courting Real Madrid striker Alvaro Morata. However, they also claim that Chelsea are leading the race for the Spaniard who is seeking an exit from Madrid in search of more regular first team football.
The former Juventus striker looks likely to head to the Premier League in one way or another, but Jose Mourinho will clearly be trying to persuade him to leave his former club to join his project at Old Trafford, though he may only be a back-up option if the likes of Romelu Lukaku or Antoine Griezmann cannot be signed.
Firstly, the club needs to concern themselves with qualifying for the Champions League if they are to sign such high reputation players. Sunday’s draw against relegation fighting Swansea City did little to help their cause and manager Jose Mourinho reacted telling the club website:
“Swansea were in the game but scored when they were less in the game. In the first half, they were really in good control and were playing close to our box, having a few opportunities. The second half was under our control; the Rooney and Martial situation [a clear chance for United] is totally incredible.
“We were totally in control and then conceded a goal from a free-kick where you have to be a bit more experienced to avoid it. Again, tired people were trying absolutely everything, so if people want to be critical of the performance they are free to do it but, I’m not, I’m happy.
Mourinho was forced to make several changes with one eye on Thursday night’s fixture against Celta Vigo in the Europa League semi-final but Wayne Rooney took the lead after a Marcus Rashford dive won a penalty for the home side. Gylfi Sigurdsson equalised from a fine free-kick to ensure that one point was heading back to Wales with the visitors.
Another negative from the game was yet more injury news for two defenders as both Luke Shaw and Eric Bailly were forced off. Mourinho was clearly frustrated and bizarrely seemed to criticise left-back Shaw as he told MUTV:
“I don’t know at all. Luke has to be a big injury, when you’re out after 10 minutes, it has to be a big injury. Eric, maybe he is injured but, at the same time, maybe it’s in relation to him being the guy who’s played 800 minutes of football in April. Maybe he has also a relation to that.”
Mourinho could not provide any kind of estimate in how long the pair will be out for, but it’s believed that Shaw suffered an ankle injury whilst Bailly will have to overcome a knee problem.
