The Irish Independent have contradicted many reports by claiming that the club withdrew their interest in Antoine Griezmann after realising that any deal would be highly unlikely, rather than having pulled out of a deal which was close to being sealed.
Atlético Madrid’s failure in an appeal of their transfer ban for this summer is likely to have complicated the deal too far after Griezmann had already been unsure of the move after being keen to remain at the club as they move into their new stadium, the Wanda Metropolitano, in time for next season.
An alternative may be Everton striker Romelu Lukaku and the Independent report that the club have made initial enquiries into the availability of the Belgian after he refused to extend his contract at Goodison Park earlier this year in a move which is believed to see him leave Merseyside in this summer transfer window after ending the season as one of the league’s top scorers.
The number 10 worked with Jose Mourinho at Chelsea but was never given a real opportunity in the first team, though it now seems that the former Real Madrid boss has been convinced of his quality by his displays for Everton in the Premier League.
United could be set to miss out on another target though as Portuguese newspaper Record report that it is Barcelona who are set to seal a £43 million deal for right-back Nelson Semedo, having also been strongly linked with becoming a long term replacement for Antonio Valencia.
However, Jose Mourinho may not be too upset as the position is not one of his priorities this season after Valencia’s consistent and impressive displays, and will instead look to focus elsewhere with other defensive and attacking additions likely.
