Manchester United round-up: €40-45m offer for Serie A star; Atlético chase striker; duo set to stay

Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport report that Manchester United have made an offer worth €40-45 million (£35-40 million) for AS Roma midfielder Radja Nainggolan. The Belgian is thought to be one of the club’s top targets in the middle of the park and will hope to lure him away from Serie A this summer.

A goal-scoring midfielder who is not afraid to get stuck in, he could fit in well in a Jose Mourinho side. With the likes of Paul Pogba and Ander Herrera already occupying places in the side, it will take a player of huge quality, such as Nainggolan, to find a regular spot in the United starting eleven.

One player who has proven that he can fit in at Old Trafford is Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Spanish newspaper Sport believe that his agent Mino Raiola is considering his client’s future, with United still an option on the table, though they now face competition from Spanish giants Atletico Madrid.

Diego Simeone’s team face a transfer ban until 1st January 2018, fortunately coinciding with the 35-year-old’s expected recovery time from a serious knee injury. That said, the Swede is believed to have enjoyed his time in the north-west and may want to remain in England rather than return to Spain, where he had an unhappy spell at Barcelona.

Two more players with unclear futures are Luke Shaw and Ashley Young, with their contracts both set to expire next summer. However, the Manchester Evening News claim that neither player has been told that they are free to leave the club and, at present, they will have a role to play next season.

The news may come as a surprise, particularly in the case of Luke Shaw. The left-back was repeatedly subject to public criticism from his manager throughout the season and has suffered from a number of injuries.
