The Mirror say that Jose Mourinho retains a hope of an Old Trafford reunion with his former Real Madrid midfielder Mesut Ozil, now at Arsenal. The pair were hugely successful at the Bernabéu and Mourinho was reportedly furious when club directors went above his head to sell the German to the London club.
The playmaker is thought to be unsettled at the club as they look likely to miss out on Champions League football next season, and a move to Manchester could be tempting for him if he is desperate to stay at the elite level.
Another player who could make the move from north London to Manchester is Tottenham star Hugo Lloris, according to the Express. They claim that the French international is being lined up as a potential replacement for David de Gea should Real Madrid make an offer which is too good to refuse in the summer.
Few fans would want to see De Gea leave, regardless of who the potential replacement is, but in Lloris the club would have one of the highest quality and most experienced options. That is, of course, if they can convince Daniel Levy to part with his captain to a close rival at the top of the Premier League.
De Gea was absent in goal for the side’s visit to the Stadium of Light over the weekend, a performance which earned praise from manager Jose Mourinho as he told the club website:
“The result was good. We resisted the results of yesterday when Manchester City and Liverpool won, they left us in a position of ‘yes’ or ‘no’. It was ‘yes’. We got three points and it was a solid display. We started positively. I’m not saying very aggressive in terms of the intensity of our game but comfortable and in control… It was open at 0-0. We were in control without danger… Every team has a couple of them. Zlatan did that. It’s very important… We felt the game was in our pocket. In this beautiful weather, the game was played at a more slow intensity.”
Zlatan Ibrahimovic opened the scoring on the half hour mark before Henrikh Mkhitaryan added another just after half-time. Finally, substitute Marcus Rashford put the cherry on the cake with a composed finish in injury time.
