The Sun claim that Manchester United are preparing a shocking £55 million bid for Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero, in an attempt to persuade the Argentinean to swap the blue half of Manchester for the red, as Pep Guardiola has declared him surplus to requirements.
The breakthrough of Gabriel Jesus at the Etihad has meant that their hero striker Aguero has become marginalised, despite his incredible goalscoring record in the Premier League since joining the club in 2011. With 31 goals in 42 games this season alone, he could represent a long-term replacement for Zlatan Ibrahimovic up-front.
The news comes after reports emerged suggesting that Kylian Mbappe has decided to reject any approach from Manchester United for his services, as the Monaco striker is set for a move to Real Madrid, with Spanish newspaper Marca reporting that the La Liga title favourites are already in talks with his family, despite interest from United and Paris Saint-Germain.
The teenager’s superb form, in Ligue Un as much as in the Champions League, have seen him linked with a number of clubs, but Real Madrid are thought to be leading the race for the Frenchman as Mbappe looks up to Cristiano Ronaldo as a hero and enjoys their attacking style of play.
Either of these two offensive targets would not come cheap, and that may not be such a problem as Spanish football journalist Guillem Balague told Sky Sports that it was his understanding that Jose Mourinho has been given a budget worth up to £400 million for this summer transfer window, saying:
“This is going to be perhaps one of the biggest summers in terms of spending and the teams that will spend most of the money are in the Premier League. I do know that Manchester United can spend £400m if they need to, but they won’t be the only ones to spend a lot. It’s going to be a huge summer.”
If United miss out on a top four finish this term they will need to win the Europa League in order to qualify for the Champions League next season, and that could be crucial if they are to secure the kinds of targets that they may be aiming for with their planned transfer activity.
