Manchester United could be set to poach one of Chelsea’s top summer transfer targets, according to the Daily Star. They say that the Red Devils have agreed a £35 million deal for Monaco midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko as Jose Mourinho continues to plague his former club in this summer’s transfer window.
Chelsea were close to sealing a deal but have since held the move up after being reluctant to allow Nemanja Matic to move to Old Trafford for £40 million, and it now seems that United’s choice of alternative target could prove costly for the Blues. For United, such a move would only compound the symbolic power of the move for the club after signing Romelu Lukaku.
A move could be funded by the sale of forward Anthony Martial as the Mirror say that Serie A side AS Roma are considering a £30 million bid for the Frenchman. The Italians made an initial enquiry over a loan move but were rebuffed, with United only prepared to consider a permanent sale.
Given his failure to convince last season when given opportunities by Jose Mourinho, it may make sense to allow the former Monaco star to leave. With a move for Romelu Lukaku not coming cheap, selling Martial, who was little more than a squad option for Mourinho last campaign, may help to balance the books.

Another reason for the club’s move for Tiemoue Bakayoko could be Tottenham’s reluctance to sell target Eric Dier. The Independent believe that Daniel Levy and co. would reject any bid for the holding midfielder, despite Manchester United having been happy to meet his £50 million valuation.
The England international lost his place as first choice to the midfield duo of Victor Wanyama and Moussa Dembele last season but will clearly not be allowed to leave just yet. Dier still forms a big part of Mauricio Pochettino’s plans and it seems unlikely that even United’s financial power could make this deal happen now.
