Manchester United round-up: Griezmann deal still possible; teenager prefers London move; Champions League draw seeding revealed
Sky Sports’ Spanish football expert Guillem Balague has claimed that Manchester United are likely to return with another offer for Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann next summer. The Frenchman would reportedly be open to a move to Old Trafford in the future after not making the move in the current transfer window.
He decided to stay in Madrid this summer as Atletico Madrid were under a transfer ban which would prevent Diego Simeone from replacing the forward if he had left the club to move to Manchester. Whether United still want him or not in 12 months time remains unclear after spending big on the likes of Romelu Lukaku.
Another left sided player attracting interest from Manchester United is Fulham’s teen sensation Ryan Sessegnon. The 17-year-old left-back is a target for the Red Devils, according to ESPN, but they say that the youngster would prefer to remain in London, with Tottenham also having been linked.
Sessegnon broke into the Championship side’s first team last season and has caught the eye with his impressive form, but United could face a challenge to persuade him to move to Manchester. Given Spurs’ excellent record of developing young homegrown talent, it could take a big effort from Jose Mourinho and co. to win Sessegnon over.
Elsewhere, the club are preparing for their return to the Champions League for the first time since 2014 when David Moyes’ campaign ended in failure. The Independent now say that the club have been seeded in Pot Two of the draw, meaning they will avoid teams like Paris Saint-Germain, Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund.
United will be hoping that they draw one of the lower ranked sides from Pot One, such as Ukranian outfit Shakhtar Donetsk or Russian side Spartak Moscow, when the draw takes place on Thursday. All pots will be confirmed late on Wednesday evening after the final qualifiers have been played.
