Barcelona could look to cash in on midfield flop Andre Gomes this summer, according to Marca, and The Sun believe that Jose Mourinho is keeping an eye on the situation and may make a move for the Portugal international. Gomes only joined from Valencia last summer but failed to live up to expectations.
Following the signing of Nemanja Matic in the middle of the park, it is hard to see where Gomes would fit into the United team. More of an offensive midfielder, he may provide competition for Paul Pogba but it would be an expensive operation to add a player to an already overcrowded area of the United squad.
One player who could be set to join is Paris Saint-Germain’s Serge Aurier. A deal is now only waiting upon visa issues and a £25 million fee has been agreed between the two clubs for the Ivory Coast international, the Independent’s Chief Football Writer Miguel Delaney said on Twitter.
Aurier will look to add an alternative to the likes of Antonio Valencia and Matteo Darmian. The quick full-back is known for his attacking threat down the flank and could add another dimension to United on the counter-attack, particularly as Valencia ages and requires more rest and rotation.
Nemanja Matic has already put pen to paper and completed his move to Manchester. After finalising his £40 million move from Chelsea, the Serbian told MUTV that he is delighted to have moved to the Red Devils and reunited with former boss Jose Mourinho, saying:
“I feel great. I am very happy because I am part of this great club… Manchester is one of the biggest clubs in the world and also I wanted to train with Jose (Mourinho)… I think this squad is ready because it’s more mature and they have already worked with Jose one year and they know what they have to do and I am sure we can do many things this season.”
United fans will get their first opportunity to see Matic in action against Sampdoria at Old Trafford on Wednesday evening, though it is unclear how fit he will be having missed Chelsea’s pre-season tour to secure a move.
