Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Blaise Matuidi travelled to England yesterday to discuss a possible transfer to the Premier League, according to Goal.com. Manchester United have been strongly linked with the France international, who was reportedly allowed a short break from preparations for his nation’s Euro 2016 semi-final against Germany.
Although the report does not explicitly state the name the club concerned, it us understood the Red Devils are the side who are attempting to sign him. With new manager Unai Emery planning a summer of major changes to his squad, it appears Matuidi is one of those who could be on the way out, with Manchester United now linked with a £20million deal.
At 29 years of age, Matuidi would bring both an abundance of experience and world-class ability to the club. He is a dynamic, tough tackling midfielder and would undoubtedly add a level of energy in the centre of the park that the Red Devils have been severely lacking. With a work-rate comparable to that of Leicester’s N’Golo Kante, he would soon form an affinity with the Old Trafford faithful.
Last season, Matuidi made 31 appearances in the league for Paris Saint Germain, scoring four goals and recording six assists. He averaged a 91.8% pass success rate throughout his involvement, while weighing in with 2.4 tackles and 1.5 interceptions per game. Meanwhile, at this summer’s Euros, he has started four games for his country, proving influential in their unbeaten run to the semi-final stage of the competition.
Meanwhile, Jose Mourinho is confident that he can lure Paul Pogba to Manchester United, according to the Daily Mail. The Portuguese boss believes that he can secure the deal worth around £80million to bring the Juventus midfielder to Old Trafford, and he has reportedly told friends to expect a big money arrival within the current transfer window – and the Frenchman certainly fits that criteria.
However, this follows a report published by the Guardian, that suggests the club are second favourites to sign the Juventus man, behind Champions League winners Real Madrid. In fact, it is believed that will only join Manchester United if his first choice of Real Madrid proves impossible, with José Mourinho’s hopes of securing the France midfielder resting on outbidding the Spanish club.
Mourinho will ultimately have a choice to make. Does he go all out to sign Pogba, or save his efforts and opt for a more attainable alternative? The Old Trafford faithful may harbour dreams of re-signing Paul Pogba, but bringing in Blaise Matuidi instead would prove to be significantly cheaper and almost as effective. Furthermore, the latter wouldn’t have the pressure of living up to such an enormous transfer fee.
Finally, Squawka claim that, although Everton are hoping to persuade Juan Mata to join them from Manchester United in a £20million deal, the playmaker currently favours a return to former club Valencia. The Spaniard is expected to leave Old Trafford this summer and Everton have made an enquiry for his services as owner Farhad Moshiri attempts to back new manager Ronald Koeman in the transfer market.
Fans will be devastated to see Mata leave. However, they would undoubtedly be happier to see him move back to the La Liga outfit, than west along the M62 to Goodison Park. He has become a supporter’s favourite throughout his short time at the club, and although Mourinho’s decision to let him leave will be accepted, the United faithful would be concerned if he were to join a Premier League rival.
