Manchester United: Pogba deal sealed; Real Madrid star linked; Schweinsteiger's options limited
After weeks and months of rumours and speculation, some reports now claim that a move for Paul Pogba has been signed, sealed and completed, and all that is now waiting is the announcement of the deal. The Daily Record claim that a £110 million deal has been struck, but no announcement is expected just yet, with the French midfielder still away on holiday.
Having sold the 23-year-old for just £800,000 four years ago, it represents a poor piece of business for the club, though that won’t dampen the excitement of signing one of the world’s most exciting players despite lacking Champions League football.
In quite a coup for the club, Pogba will complete the Mourinho revolution and alongside the likes of Mkhitaryan and Ibrahimovic, he is sure to excite and impress fans at Old Trafford in the season to come.
However, there may be another shock move, with the Mirror claiming that the club may launch a surprise £45 million bid for Real Madrid striker Alvaro Morata. The Spanish club re-signed their former youth product from Juventus for just £23 million earlier this summer, initially with the plan to sell him at a profit, but it is now believed that he will stay at the Bernabeu to form part of Zinedine Zidane’s plans.
With the likes of Ibrahimovic, Martial, Rooney and Rashford already on the front line, and with Chelsea already having had offers of over £60 million rejected, it seems unlikely that such a move would be successful if it were even to take place.
Mourinho already has a selection headache up front without adding in another expensive buy, particularly with his preference to play just one striker in his systems that he has used previously at the likes of Chelsea, Madrid and Inter.
There is also bad news in the club’s attempts to shift a number of players, including Bastian Schweinsteiger, after Carlo Ancelotti, manager of his old club Bayern Munich, ruled out a move for the former midfielder according to the Mirror. The workhorse is unwanted by Mourinho looks destined to leave this summer, though his destination remains unclear.
With Schweinsteiger only just having returned to training this week after the Euros, it may be expected that there would be little progress in the club’s attempts to sell him just yet, but the number of potential suitors may concern bosses already.
United will hope that interest in the injury-plagued midfielder increases as he gains fitness, with the World Cup winner also keen to leave rather than see out his career rotting in the reserves at Carrington.
Another man keen to leave is said to be Adnan Januzaj, who has demanded a permanent move, and the Mirror say that the club have now told him that a bid of at least £10 million will be required to allow them to let him go permanently, with the club favouring a loan move.
David Moyes at Sunderland was amongst those said to be interested, but such a fee may prove to be an obstacle to the deal, so this one may well go to the wire, with United also unlikely to want to sell him without a potential buy back clause or hefty sell on fee which may not best please the club’s chasing him.
