Ander Herrera – 6

Battled hard in the middle of the park but his performance will be tainted by his decision to turn his back on Granit Xhaka’s shot from distance which deflected off him and looped over David de Gea and into the back of the net to break the deadlock.

Michael Carrick – 6

Did a great job protecting the back four whenever possible and looked to start attacking moves from deep, but he had his work cut out with few options in front of him and was left to spend most of his time breaking up play.

Wayne Rooney – 6

Exploited a few spaces early on in the game but lacked the energy or pace to provide the real impetus that was required after going behind. When opportunities did come his way, usually from outside the box, they were almost always fired high and wide as the captain seemed to tire.
