After an incredible 25 match unbeaten run in the Premier League broke the club’s record last weekend, it was perhaps only a matter of time until a defeat for Manchester United. Even with several key men rested, defeat at Arsenal will hurt for the Red Devils.
Jose Mourinho opted to rest a number of first team players, giving a debut to young defender Axel Tuanzebe, and seemed to settle for a point with a very defensive first half display seeing the scores level at half-time.
In the second half, the Gunners were the side to get the lucky break as Granit Xhaka’s shot deflected off Ander Herrera to loop over David de Gea, and they rapidly followed it up with a header from former United striker Danny Welbeck to leave the visitors chasing the game.
Mourinho employed some of his talented options from the bench but could not do enough to protect their streak of undefeated form and will now hope to move on with both eyes now back on the Europa League semi-final second leg.
Here are how the United players rated:
David de Gea – 6
Did well to deny Aaron Ramsey early on but could do nothing about either goal conceded as he was caught out by the deflection off Ander Herrera’s back for Granit Xhaka’s strike and then was left with no chance when Danny Welbeck headed past him from only a few yards out.
