Antonio Valencia – 8

The right back showed all of his experience as he led the back line by example, remaining responsible defensively and also bombing on to support his team mates early on to add an extra dimension in attack.

Chris Smalling – 7

Strong and showed no sign of the injury he overcame to start, he looked assured and kept the defence tight with his vision and anticipation key with pace in and around him.

Daley Blind – 7

Like Smalling, he was comfortable and rarely looked threatened despite lacking the pace to keep up with the Ajax attack. His experience made the difference with a solid display.

Matteo Darmian – 7

Offered defensive solidity and a threat down the flank, he didn’t leave any gaps in behind for the Dutch side to exploit and was responsible when moving forwards.
