Manchester United are reportedly hopeful of striking a deal to sign Atalanta defender and Italian international Giorgio Scalvini.
The 20-year-old centre-back is one of Europe’s most talented defensive prospects, with Scalvini breaking into Atalanta’s starting XI as a teenager and remaining there ever since.
And with the January transfer window now open, interest is beginning to emerge for Scalvini, with United, naturally, one of the clubs interested in signing the defender.

Now, according to journalist Alfredo Pedulla, the Red Devils are confident that they can win the race to sign the €60m (£52m)-rated defender, with Erik Ten Hag’s backline in need of a refresh.
Lauded by the Italian media as a ‘generational talent’, it’s no real shock why United are so interested in signing Scalvini under new minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe.
Yet given how little United actually have to spend this January, the odds of a transfer happening this month for a player as expensive as Scalvini feel close to zero.
Giorgio Scalvini should be Manchester United’s top defensive summer target

January is always a difficult month for top Premier League clubs to secure signings that could go on to become real game-changers.
And whilst United have managed a few of these down the years, most recently Bruno Fernandes, this window feels like it will be one used to plan for the upcoming summer market.
As a result, Scalvini should be viewed as United’s top defensive target for later this year, with the 20-year-old centre-back truly an exceptional talent who could be a dream at Old Trafford.
The defender is mature beyond his years and already a full international with Italy, and United could be a perfect next step for Scalvini if the centre-back wants to move on from Atalanta this summer.
