Manchester United: No bid for Lindelof; £35m move for right-back; club react to Martial interest

Despite speculation that Victor Lindelof was set to join the Red Devils for a fee between £38 million and £42 million, with some sources even claiming that he had been assigned a squad number, BBC Sport claim that the Red Devils will not make a bid for the Swedish 22-year-old.

The BBC claim that the form of defensive duo Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo has convinced Jose Mourinho that there is no need to splash out on a central defender in January and may instead wait for the summer before considering his options.

Instead, the Mirror, cited by Metro, claim that a £35 million deal will be attempted with Benfica, but for right-back Nelson Semedo. The lack of depth in the position has concerned Mourinho, and the 22-year-old could be the solution and provide competition for Antonio Valencia.

The youngster has so far earned just one cap for his country, Portugal, but has impressed everyone with his displays for Benfica in the league and in the Champions League with Mourinho clearly hoping that Semedo can continue this improvement to become a key figure for the Red Devils.

The Times believe that Manchester United have told French forward Anthony Martial that he will not be allowed to leave the club this month, with Sevilla hoping to bring him to Spain on loan as he grows unhappy with the amount of first team football he is getting at Old Trafford this season.

The 21-year-old has made just seven starts in the Premier League this campaign, and has been an unused substitute and left out of the matchday squad entirely in two of the last three fixtures that United have played, with little sign of a re-emergence from the ex-Monaco man despite his impressive debut season under Louis Van Gaal.
