Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho was reportedly in attendance during Belgium’s match against Iceland on Thursday, with the Guardian suggesting he was monitoring Tottenham Hotspur’s Toby Alderweireld.
However, a move to Old Trafford would represent a backwards step for the centre-half and Alderweireld would be misguided in switching north London for Manchester.
Under Mourinho, dysfunction and controversy has ravaged the United dressing room, and despite significant investment, quality performances on the pitch have failed to materialise.

The Red Devils currently sit eighth in the table, seven points and four places below Spurs.
At the moment, it seems highly likely that United’s only route to Champions League football next season will be through winning the competition — the top four is quickly slipping out of reach.
Why would Alderweireld swap the allure of Champions League football for a struggling, mid-table side?
Furthermore, Mourinho has a poor track record of cultivating players at United. Prone to publicly airing his grievances and banishing players from the first team, the environment at Old Trafford can often become toxic.
In all, Toby Alderweireld would be foolish to trade his spot at Tottenham Hotspur for a tumultuous role at Old Trafford with no guarantee of Champions League football.
