Manchester United: Mourinho eyes City personnel; defender set to depart; Zlatan had alternatives
In a sensational move, the Mirror report that Manchester United boss is eyeing up four key Manchester City scouts as he seeks a complete revamp of the scouting set up at Old Trafford. Along with Ed Woodward, Mourinho is set to offer the four UK based scouts pay rises of up to 50% to persuade them to move from the Etihad to the red half of Manchester as they try to close the gap between the two clubs.
Bosses have grown concerned over recent years regarding the lack of young local talent coming through the ranks, with Marcus Rashford one of few exceptions to the latest trend, with Manchester City picking up many of the latest local talents as City edge ahead given their superb new facilities and community work. It has seen a complete switch over the last decade as the money from City’s wealthy owners has also gone into youth recruitment and is now yielding dividends as United continue to miss out on the hottest young talents, with it never move evident than City under 14’s 9-0 victory over the United side of the same age last season.
One man who could be set to leave Old Trafford is unwanted defender Matteo Darmian, with Gazzetta Dello Sporto claiming that he will join Inter Milan on an initial loan deal. Darmian was impressive after first signing for the club in the summer of 2015 but his form suffered in the second half of last season and has been almost completely discarded by Jose Mourinho since his arrival at the club this summer. Now, the Italian is close to a move for a small fee, which will also give the former Champions League winners the option to make the deal permanent in the summer.
It will be a relief for Jose Mourinho and Manchester United as it will see some wages cut from their bill with Darmian one of the many players to be told that he has no future at the club by Mourinho, as his little involvement this season has proven. It may also see some funds freed up to allow the Portuguese manager to make a move to strengthen his defence in January.
Agent Mino Raiola has also revealed that his client, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, turned down a huge offer from China to instead head to Old Trafford to team up with Mourinho, who he previously worked with at the Milan club. The Daily Mail claim that having run down his PSG contract to leave for free, Raiola explained:
“Ibrahimovic is the best. He turned down €100m net from the Chinese. He doesn’t want more money, he wants to win.”
That offer would equate to a wage of around £1.65 million per week, an astronomical sum for the Swedish forward. Instead, Ibrahimovic opted for Manchester, where his wages are undoubtedly much lower, but he is rapidly becoming a fan favourite with his steady supply of vital goals, such as his midweek winner against Zorya Luhansk in midweek.
