Manchester United: Midfielder's contract talks stall; Southampton-man can leave; Mourinho blasts Everton
Star midfielder Jesse Lingard is stalling in contract talks with Manchester United and has turned down an offer worth £60,000 a week, claim the Express. The club youth product is believed to be holding out for a contract similar to that of England team mate Harry Kane, worth around £100,000 per week.
The winger has no plans to leave the club but is holding out for a better wage in his new deal to extend his stay at Old Trafford past his current deal which is set to expire in 2018.
Southampton have agreed to allow Jose Fonte to leave the club, alerting Manchester United to his availability, after a falling out when the club captain discovered that director of football Les Reed did not make him aware of a £9 million bid from Everton in the summer, claim the Daily Record.
Now, Ed Woodward will be put to work with Fonte one of Jose Mourinho’s top targets for the January window as he seeks to add depth and quality to his defence.
Jose Mourinho spoke out after yesterday’s draw with Everton to criticise the Toffees after their late equaliser from the penalty spot and to praise his team’s performance, saying:
“It’s another game with a very good performance in a very difficult place to play, in a very emotional stadium, against a team full of good players. So it was a very good performance but a bad result in relation to the performance. We were the best team by far but we didn’t win… Everton is not a passing team like they were. Everton is a team that plays direct. Everything is direct. Goalkeeper direct. Ashley Williams direct. Funes Mori direct. Everything is direct.”
Zlatan Ibrahimovic continued his return to form with a goal just before half time, but the Red Devils were lucky to keep Marcos Rojo on the field after a nasty two footed lunge.
