Manchester United and Liverpool have butted heads in the transfer market on more than one occasion.
The Reds and their greatest rivals have often been in the market for the same players, and these transfer races are always interesting to watch when they happen.
From Michael Owen to Phil Jones all the way to Darwin Nunez Liverpool and United have often been in the market for the same players over the years.
Now, it would appear both clubs are keen on the same midfield target.
Indeed, Joao Neves is a player that has been strongly linked with a move to Liverpool in recent times.
It’s claimed that Liverpool have been pushing hard this summer to get a deal done for Neves, but United have now made their first move for the Benfica star.

Manchester United make Joao Neves bid
According to Record, Manchester United have made a €70m (£59m) bid to sign Joao Neves from Benfica.
The Red Devils are said to have made it clear that this is as high as they will go in their efforts to sign the ‘excellent’ midfielder.
Unfortunately for United, it’s unlikely that a deal will get done at this price.
Joao Neves is valued much higher
Joao Neves has a £104m release clause in his contract, and throughout this summer, Benfica have been steadfast in their view that he will only leave the club for that fee.
United are some way off meeting that figure, and with this bid said to be as high as Erik ten Hag’s side are willing to go, this deal probably won’t happen.
That leaves the door open for a team like Liverpool, and after bidding £111m for Moises Caicedo last summer, the Reds may have the cash reserves ready to make this sort of splash in the transfer market.
Neves will continue to be linked with moves away from Benfica, but whether or not any club stumps up the necessary cash to sign him remains to be seen.
