Manchester United have made 19-year-old defender Arsenal really like one of their top transfer targets – journalist

Arsenal now look set to face competition from Manchester United if they want to sign Lyon defender Malo Gusto.

Journalist Florian Plettenberg has reported that Man United have now made Gusto one of their top transfer targets.

Arsenal have been watching Gusto for some time, and have regularly scouted the 19-year-old.

Gusto has attracted interest from virtually every major club in Europe, according to 90min.

Now, Manchester United have stepped up their interest in the young Frenchman, and are looking to act before their rivals.

The right-back, who can also play as a wing-back, has been first choice at Lyon this season.

Results have been mixed for Lyon this campaign, and they currently find themselves 8th in Ligue 1.

If Lyon miss out on Champions League football this season, Gusto will almost certainly leave in the summer.

However, Manchester United’s may want to sign Gusto before the likes of Arsenal make their interest more concrete.

Manchester United want to sign Gusto

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has been playing centre-back Ben White on the right this season.

Arteta may now be considering bringing in a new full-back who naturally plays in this position.

The need for a right-sided defender may be greater at Old Trafford, with Erik ten Hag unimpressed by Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

Wan-Bissaka has been linked with West Ham this season, and looks to be completely out of the reckoning in Manchester.

Diogo Dalot has had a brilliant campaign, topped off by replacing Joao Cancelo in the Portugal starting line-up.

Manchester United may now want Gusto to act as competition for Dalot.

The 19-year-old is fantastic in possession, and frequently pops up in forward areas.

He’s also good in one-v-one situations, although no one excels more than Wan-Bissaka in those scenarios.

Arsenal’s interest has gone quiet in recent weeks, and they will have other priorities in the January transfer window.

This gives Ten Hag’s side the perfect chance to bring in one of Europe’s most exciting young defenders.
