It seems a while since the name Julen Lopetegui was mentioned in England, but the Spanish coach has been mentioned once more as talk of a new Manchester United manager heats up.

The current Sevilla manager was said to be on the radar of Tottenham last summer as Daniel Levy sought the best full-time replacement for the recently departed Jose Mourinho. In the end, Lopetegui stayed in Spain and Spurs instead opted to bring in Nuno Santo. As we all know, then went south quickly.

However, Lopetegui is now being mentioned as a potential manager for Manchester United. The Telegraph claims that the 55-year-old is ‘impressing’ Old Trafford officials with his work in La Liga, and he is on a list of candidates being considered by the Red Devils.

Sevilla are doing very well over in La Liga this season and are second only to Real Madrid. Rather impressively, they sit seven points ahead of Barcelona as well.

TBR’s View: Lopetegui Surely Not The Man For United

While his experience is there for all to see it’s hard to imagine United not going for a younger coach who they can invest time and money into over a longer period.

This is part of the reason we didn’t see them appoint current Tottenham boss Antonio Conte. It seems unlikely, then, that Lopetegui would be the number one choice if United can help it.

But the manager’s merry-go-round works in weird and wonderful ways. And it would be quite the story if Manchester United ended up with a coach Tottenham wanted a year or so back. Spurs, meanwhile, have the coach who most thought would end up at Old Trafford.

It certainly can be a funny old game at times.
