Manchester United have recalled 22-year-old goalkeeper from his loan spell with Vitoria Setubal in his native Portugal, as per the Daily Mail.
They report that Championship strugglers Reading, with their newly-found Portuguese influence in the shape of manager Jose Gomes, lead the race to secure the gloveman’s services for the remainder of the season.
Pereira has struggled for minutes so far this season and United apparently want him to leave the club on a temporary basis once more to further his development.
It is not just the Royals who are in need of improvement between the sticks; Championship table-toppers Leeds United need a new stopper to add competition for Bailey Peacock-Farrell, following the injury to Jamal Blackman.
Leeds fans may not fancy the idea of loaning a player from their bitter rivals, especially after the resounding disappointment of the last player to cross the divide, Cameron Borthwick-Jackson.
But Pereira is a real talent and fits the bill for Marcelo Bielsa as a commanding shot-stopper who is also adept with his feet, which cannot be said for some of the other names who have been linked with a switch to Elland Road this month.
Peacock-Farrell needs competition to keep him on his toes and Pereira will be keen to muscle in front of him after a disappointing end to 2018; this move would work for all parties, despite the historical rivalry between the clubs.
