Newcastle United have reportedly joined Manchester United in the race to sign Odion Ighalo on a permanent basis this summer from Chinese Super League side Shanghai Shenhua – and Manchester United supporters have reacted to the news.
Sky Sports claim Shanghai Shenhua are expecting 30-year-old Ighalo to return to China in July at the end of his loan, in order for the Nigerian attacker to begin the Chinese Super League campaign with Choi Kang-hee’s side.
Former Watford striker Ighalo has scored four goals in eight appearances for United since joining the club on loan in January, but he will leave Old Trafford when the loan ends – unless Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side stump up a permanent £20million.
However, a third avenue has arrived for the Nigeria international and that is a permanent move to Newcastle. The Toon are certainly after a striker and with a potential takeover reportedly set to be concluded this week, Ighalo could move north.
It remains to be seen if either United or Newcastle are willing to buy Ighalo permanently before he returns to China, and whether such an early transfer will see Ighalo be allowed to finish the season at Old Trafford – or even play for Newcastle.
Manchester United supporters have reacted on Twitter to the reported news that their club face competition in the form of Newcastle’s soon-to-be owners for Ighalo’s signature – and many are desperate for their club to win the race and sign Ighalo.
