Manchester United fans react as Leeds star Kalvin Phillips shines on Monday night

Kalvin Phillips starred for Leeds United on Monday night as Marcelo Bielsa’s side pushed Arsenal all the way in the third-round FA Cup clash at The Emirates – and Manchester United fans have discussed signing the midfielder on Twitter after the match.

Phillips, 24, clocked up his 28th appearance of the season for Leeds as he sat at the base of the midfield. This time, though, he was given the toughest task of his season so far – to mark World Cup winner Mesut Ozil.

At half-time, it was clear who was coming out on top. Ozil managed to touch the ball just 10 times throughout the first 45 minutes, as Phillips refused to give the former Real Madrid star an inch of space.

Arsenal did go on to win the match 1-0 thanks to Reiss Nelson’s second-half goal, with both sides hitting the bar and having chances in an end-to-end clash. But Ozil did not have an enjoyable night and was eventually subbed off in the 77th minute.

It is not as though Phillips has only just burst onto the scene. The Leeds academy product has been heavily linked with a move to the Premier League. The Sun even claimed in October that Manchester United had sent scouts to watch Phillips.

It is unlikely that a Leeds-born player and fan would ever leave Leeds to move to Old Trafford – though Alan Smith did do such a thing in 2004. Manchester United fans reacted to Phillips’ display, and many want the Leeds star signed.
