Manchester United fans left annoyed at Ronald Koeman’s treatment of Matthijs de Ligt

Manchester United supporters have expressed their frustrations at Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman over the treatment of Matthijs de Ligt.

De Ligt has become a mainstay in Ruben Amorim’s defence at Old Trafford and has quickly proven himself a dominant force within the Premier League.

The Red Devils defender is tied with Virgil van Dijk for winning the most aerial duels in the Premier League this season with 17 each.

However, his impressive individual performances at club level have not been enough to get him into the Netherlands starting line-up.

Manchester United fans claim Matthijs de Ligt is being ‘disrespected’

Ronald Koeman’s side played Poland on Friday in a World Cup qualifying game, and de Ligt was an unused substitute for the 1-1 draw.

While that was frustrating for some Manchester United fans, what they took issue with was the fact that Jan Paul van Hecke was replaced in the 87th minute by Stefan de Vrij, and not De Ligt.

That is despite De Vrij not having played a minute of competitive football this season, which has led to Manchester United supporters voicing their opinions.

One supporter said, “De Ligt and the Netherlands deserve better,” as they clarified that Koeman isn’t getting the best out of his options.

Meanwhile, another fan said that the Manchester United star should, “obviously be starting for them” moving forward.

While many supporters are angry on De Ligt’s behalf, many are seeing the positives from a Manchester United perspective, as one made it clear they’re “quite happy with De Ligt being rested.”

Meanwhile, another said, “I’d rather they don’t play him than play him and bring him back with injuries,” as they find the positives from the situation.

Matthijs de Ligt will be fresher for Manchester United

De Ligt not being featured for the Netherlands might be a point of contention for him personally, but it did provide a positive from a Manchester United perspective.

While there is still one more match to be played in this international break, even if De Ligt features in that, he will be fresher than if he had played both.

That is a positive for Amorim, as he aims to build positivity around Manchester United after an underwhelming start to the season.

When Manchester United return to action, they have a crucial derby game against Manchester City, in which De Ligt will be expected to start.
