Tottenham midfielder Eric Dier and West Ham prospect Declan Rice are on Manchester United’s shortlist to replace Nemanja Matic this summer.
According to the Times, the pair of England internationals are being talked about as potential new arrivals by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as he looks to put his stamp on this United squad.
Matic cost a reported (BBC) £40 million when he joined from Chelsea back in 2017, but his ageing legs were a real drawback for United, especially when Solskjaer tried to introduce a high-tempo style of play.
By contrast, Dier was brought to Tottenham for just £4 million (BBC) back in 2014 as a young central defender and has developed into a holding midfielder thereafter.
Rice also broke into the West Ham team as a defender under David Moyes, before moving into midfield when Manuel Pellegrini took over at the start of last season.
A Hammers academy product, he is another who could make his club a fortune if he leaves, having cost nothing to get.
The Daily Mail report that United feel Spurs may be more willing to listen to offers for Dier than West Ham would for Rice – perhaps because the former is not a regular, where the latter is already a lynchpin.
Either way, both London clubs may well be braced for bids for their England international destroyers as the transfer window wears on.
