Manchester United could sign a forward this summer who’s nearly as prolific as Mohamed Salah and Erling Haaland

Manchester United are in desperate need of a reliable striker.

Ruben Amorim failed to see any of his players reach double figures for goals in the Premier League, as a winger in Amad Diallo and a midfielder in Bruno Fernandes topped the scoring charts for Manchester United on eight goals each.

Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee could boast just four and three Premier League goals respectively.

However, Manchester United could soon sign a solution to this issue – one who rivals Mohamed Salah and Erling Haaland – in Ollie Watkins.

How Ollie Watkins compares to Erling Haaland and Mohamed Salah

The Aston Villa No.11 could move to Old Trafford this summer.

TBR Football believe Manchester United have opened talks with Aston Villa over Watkins – having also spoken to the Villans about Emiliano Martinez and Alejandro Garnacho.

The Red Devils are also considering RB Leipzig No.30 Benjamin Sesko – who prefers Manchester United over Newcastle, according to Leipziger Volkszeitung.

Should a deal for Watkins – who Rio Ferdinand wants – materialise, Amorim would go from having two floundering strikers in Hojlund and Zirkzee to one of the most effective in England.

Since making his Premier League debut back in September 2020, the man born in Exeter has scored 75 goals in the competition – a tally only bettered by Haaland and Salah, who can boast 85 and 111 goals respectively.

Of course, there would likely be little resale value for Manchester United if this move happens – Watkins turns 30 in December – although it would finally provide Amorim with a proven frontman.

Ruben Amorim would surely have to deliver if Ollie Watkins arrives

Should Manchester United sign Watkins – who bagged 16 Premier League goals last season – Amorim would have three of the best performers in the entire division in his frontline.

The signings of Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo – who netted 15 and 20 goals respectively in the Premier League last term – should already take Manchester United to a new level.

Therefore, if Watkins completes the trio, Amorim would have a frontline who bagged 51 Premier League goals combined last season, giving the man from Lisbon few excuses if his team continue to misfire next term.
