Manchester United: Competition for Lindelof; German international offered out; Bailly could return earlier than expected

Manchester United have been linked with a move for Benfica centre-back Victor Lindelof in recent months and are believed to be lining up a summer bid for the Swedish international. However, the Mirror report that Chelsea are preparing to provide competition for the defender’s signature, with Antonio Conte making the 22-year-old a priority target. Inter Milan have also been mentioned as a possible destination for the highly-rated defender. The interest from other clubs, especially Chelsea, will make United even more determined to land Lindelof, who has the potential to become a very good centre back in years to come.

Lindelof has everything and it is easy to see why he is attracting interest from several European clubs. He has an imposing physical frame, that should allow him to transition nicely to the Premier League. Despite his height and dominance in the air, Lindelof is able to cover ground quickly and he is excellent in the tackle. In addition to this, he is capable of carrying the ball out of defence and picking a pass to launch an attack. This is an area of his game that he continues to work on as he can sometimes choose the wrong pass, but it is steadily improving. He would be an excellent signing for Manchester United if they manage to complete a deal over the coming months.

One player that could depart Old Trafford this month is Bastian Schweinsteiger, who has been offered to Fenerbahce by Jose Mourinho. This is a story carried by the Express, but it originates from Turkish site HTSPOR. The midfielder has had a frustrating season after being banished from the first team during the opening months. Although he has been welcomed back into the fold somewhat, he isn’t an important member of the squad and it would make sense for United to move him on this month.

The German has spoken about his future on numerous occasions and it is unlikely that he chooses to move to another European club, especially one that isn’t in one of the top five leagues, like Fenerbahce. There has been interest from MLS and Chinese clubs, which will be a lot more attractive to the World Cup winner. He has achieved nearly everything he can in the European game, playing for two massive clubs in Bayern Munich and Manchester United. It might now be the right time to move away from Europe and secure his family’s financial future.

Finally, Manchester United fans should be keeping a close eye on the African Cup of Nations today as Eric Bailly plays his final group match with the Ivory Coast. The centre-back could return in time the FA Cup fourth round, depending on how the match against Morocco goes. The Ivory Coast have drawn both of their matches so far, which leaves them needing a win to qualify for the next round. A draw won’t be good enough for the reigning champions on Tuesday, but it could provide a welcome boost for Manchester United.

Although he may not return to the squad for Sunday’s match against Wigan Athletic, even if the Ivory Coast are knocked out of the African Cup of Nations, he would return for two crucial Premier League matches next week. Bailly was impressive during the opening months of the season but has struggled to get back into the first team after his injury problems. However, it is thought that he is going to be a first team regular in the long run and it will be a boost for Jose Mourinho if he does return earlier than expected.
