Just when it seemed that Sunday afternoon couldn’t get any worse for the Red Devils as in-form central defender Eric Bailly limped off at Stamford Bridge with his side already being heavily beaten, Jose Mourinho told Sky Sports:
“He is injured and I am afraid it is a bad injury. It is in his knee, the ligament area. He feels it is really bad.”
The extent of the injury won’t be known until this evening, but if serious it could keep the former Villarreal man out for the rest of the season in a worst case scenario with little cover available to Mourinho with Phil Jones also out injured. Danny Blind would be the most likely replacement, allowing Luke Shaw back in to the team at left-back.
Another man who missed out yesterday was captain Wayne Rooney, according to the Mirror, with Chinese club Shangia SIPG preparing a £500,000 per week deal plus commercial bonuses in a deal which would see him reunited with former England manager Sven Goran-Eriksson who is currently in charge.
They reportedly approached the former Everton man last summer but he turned the move down insisting he wanted to finish his career at Old Trafford but sources now report that he may now be open to an offer after Jose Mourinho has left him on the bench for over a month in the Premier League.
With Bailly out injured, the Mirror claim that United could launch a £40 million bid for Atletico Madrid defender Jose Gimenez. Arsenal are also believed to be monitoring the situation and preparing a bid for the 21-year-old Uruguayan who is rapidly becoming a mainstay in Diego Simeone’s defence in Spain.
Tall and powerful in the air but composed with the ball at his feet, Gimenez has been labelled as one of the best young defenders in the world and would be one of the best possible signings for Mourinho as he looks to improve his back four.
