Manchester United: Atletico-man wants move; new contract for midfielder; fight for Brazilian starlet
Atletico Madrid defender and United target Jose Gimenez has reportedly demanded to leave after a falling out with Diego Simeone, according to Spanish source Don Balon. After picking up an injury playing against Deportivo A Coruna at the end of September, he was ready for a comeback in the Madrid derby on Saturday, but was ignored by his manager and left out.
The Uruguayan 21-year-old has a buyout clause of £56 million which would not be beyond the realms of possibility for Ed Woodward to fork out for one of the most highly rated central defenders in the world.
Despite looking as though he may leave the club in the summer, Michael Carrick is set to be offered another new one year deal after coming into the team to turn the side’s poor form around and has impressed Jose Mourinho. Despite now being 35-years-old, the former West Ham man is happy to sign for another year.
The Daily Mail report that Mourinho was impressed and surprised by how well Carrick worked alongside Paul Pogba in midfield, with his discipline allowing Pogba more freedom to roam forwards from midfield.
The Red Devils also face a transfer fight as they seek to secure the services of Thiago Maia, the young Brazilian starlet who is also being chased by Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain. Calciomercato report that a host of top clubs are in talks with Santos to sign the 19-year-old with United one of the most keen.
The central midfielder, who often plays a holding role, has been spoken of as a potential long term replacement for Carrick, with his vision and superb passing ability drawing clear comparisons to the Englishman and will fill a hole which Mourinho is very keen to fill as quickly as possible.
