Manchester United: £21.7million deal agreed; Griezmann latest; Shaws agent reacts to rumours

The Manchester Evening News are among the many sources to report that Manchester United are nearing completion on a deal with Lyon which could see them earn up to £21.7 million in exchange for Dutch winger Memphis Depay. Even if that fee is eventually received, with a portion of it in add-ons, it would represent a loss of nearly £5 million on the former PSV winger.

Brought to the club in 2015, Memphis failed to live up to expectations and has barely figured under Jose Mourinho this campaign. The club have protected themselves though by inserting a first refusal buy back clause and a percentage sell on fee, meaning they can still benefit should he reach his potential in Ligue 1.

That money could be used to invest in a move for Atletico Madrid striker Antoine Griezmann, according to Sky Sports. They claim that the Red Devils are interested in bringing the Frenchman to the club, but have ruled out the possibility of any move this month.

The Spanish side would refuse any approach this month given their current transfer ban but United are believed to be happy to wait until the summer to launch a big money move for the 25-year-old.

Another player subject to speculation in recent weeks is left back Luke Shaw, who has not figured for the club since EFL Cup victory over West Ham in November. Shaw’s agent, Jonathan Barnett, denied these rumours, telling the IB Times:

“I am angry with these reports suggesting Luke Shaw will leave Manchester United in the summer. I am angry at the irresponsible journalism. Luke Shaw is happy at Manchester United and also, Manchester United are happy with him.”

With just seven Premier League appearances under his belt so far this season, with Matteo Darmian preferred in recent weeks, it may be time for Shaw to up his performances in training to convince Jose Mourinho that he deserves a starting role.
